What it stabilises
The Opteka SteadyVid EX MK II is a handheld video stabiliser built for cameras and camcorders weighing up to 3.5 lbs (1.58 kg). It suits DSLR bodies with standard lenses that stay within that limit. The aluminium frame, comfort grip handle and super-smooth gimbal work together to reduce shake during moving shots. A spirit level and thumb stabiliser help keep the horizon level while you walk.
Setting it up
Mount the camera on the rubberised platform, then slide the polished chrome counter-weights onto the base rod. The kit includes one 290 g weight and two 175 g weights; combine them until the rig balances neutrally on the gimbal. The most common issue is leaving the system nose-heavy or tail-heavy, which makes the gimbal fight the operator. Take time to fine-tune the weight positions before shooting.
Capacity and headroom
The stabiliser comfortably handles setups up to the stated 3.5 lbs, covering many DSLR and lens combinations. Heavier cinema rigs, long telephoto lenses or battery grips that push the total mass beyond that figure will overload the gimbal and degrade smoothness. For those heavier builds a larger support system is required.
