Portable NVMe and SATA SSD Enclosure

This pink Orico enclosure accepts a single M.2 drive up to 4TB in either NVMe or SATA protocol. The tool-free slide tray and USB-C connection make it a simple way to turn an internal stick drive into external storage for laptops, desktops, consoles or Type-C phones. No external power is required.

USB 3.2 Gen 2 Speed Limits

With an NVMe drive the enclosure runs at 10Gbps and delivers up to 1000MB/s read and write. With a SATA drive the link drops to 5Gbps and tops out at 450MB/s. The aluminium shell acts as a heatsink but there is no fan, so sustained heavy writes on a fast NVMe drive may throttle.

Check Your Drive Keying and Host Port

Verify that your M.2 SSD uses M-key or B+M-key pinout; other keyings will not fit. Confirm the host device has a USB-C port that supports data, not just charging, and that the operating system can mount the file system on the drive. The enclosure measures 124 by 35 by 14 millimetres and weighs about 0.1 kilogram.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the NVMe or SATA version of this enclosure for my M.2 drive?

This single enclosure accepts both M.2 NVMe M-Key or B+M-Key SSDs and M.2 SATA B+M-Key SSDs up to 4TB, so you do not need to choose a separate version.

What read and write speeds will I actually see with an NVMe SSD inside?

With an NVMe drive the enclosure delivers up to 1000MB/s read and write over the USB 3.2 Gen 2 link.

Does the USB Type-C port limit NVMe drives to 5Gbps like a SATA drive?

No — NVMe SSDs run at the full 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 rate, while SATA SSDs are capped at 5Gbps.
