Rugged laptop for field work

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 is a fully rugged laptop built for outdoor and industrial environments. It runs on an Intel Core i5-3340M processor at 2.7 GHz with 4 GB of memory. The 10.1 inch touchscreen supports gloved operation. Windows 7 is installed with a Windows 8 Pro COA.

Thermals noise and power

The fanless chassis relies on passive cooling to handle the 2.7 GHz processor in normal office or field tasks. Silent operation is maintained because no spinning fans are present. Power draw stays low thanks to the efficient mobile CPU and the 10.1 inch display. The magnesium alloy case acts as a heatsink during sustained workloads.

Bundled accessories and software

Windows 8 Pro COA allows a licence upgrade when required. Intel vPro technology enables remote management for IT departments. The emissive backlit keyboard improves visibility in low-light conditions. Dual antenna pass-through supports external WWAN and WLAN antennas for stronger signals.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 500GB hard drive and what step do people skip?

The 500GB hard drive mounts inside the rugged chassis; the step often skipped is engaging the drive caddy latch fully until it clicks, otherwise the drive loses contact on vibration.

What maintenance will the 13.1" XGA touchscreen need later?

The emissive backlit keyboard and touchscreen seals should be inspected annually; replace the screen protector when scratches affect the resistive layer and clean vents to maintain the 2.7GHz processor cooling.

What limit appears first on the Core i5-3340M during sustained load?

The 4GB memory ceiling is reached before the 2.70GHz CPU throttles, forcing heavy workloads into swap on the 500GB drive and cutting sustained throughput.
