Perle IOLAN STS4-D Terminal Server

The Perle IOLAN STS4-D is a compact terminal server that provides four serial ports over a Fast Ethernet link. It ships with 32 MB of standard memory and supports 10/100Base-TX twisted-pair networking. The unit can be mounted on a wall, a DIN rail or a desktop. It includes a CD, quick-start guide and RJ-45 to DB9M adapters.

Ideal for legacy serial device integration

This server suits engineers who need to connect RS-232 equipment such as industrial controllers, barcode scanners or console ports to an Ethernet network. It is not intended for users who require USB, parallel or Centronics connectivity, nor for applications demanding Gigabit Ethernet speeds or Power over Ethernet.

Four RS-232 ports with RJ-45 connectors

The defining specification is the four serial ports presented on RJ-45 interfaces, each shipped with a DB9M adapter cable. This port count and connector choice determine whether the unit matches the cabling and device density of the target installation.

Questions about this item

What network speed does the 10/100Base-TX Ethernet port limit the four serial ports to?

The Fast Ethernet link runs at 10 or 100 Mbps, so the aggregated serial traffic cannot exceed 100 Mbps in practice.

What are the exact mounting dimensions and weight for the wall-mountable, rail-mountable, desktop form factor?

The unit measures 1.10" high, 4.40" wide, 3.20" deep (27.94 mm × 111.76 mm × 81.28 mm) and weighs approximately 360 g.

How is the IOLAN STS4-D initially configured, and which step is commonly missed?

Connect the RJ-45 Ethernet cable, apply power, then use the included RJ-45 to DB9M adapter with the Quick Start Guide to reach the CLI; skipping the adapter and trying a straight cable is the frequent error.
