Pimoroni NVMe Base for Raspberry Pi 5
The Pimoroni PIM699 is a PCIe extension board that adds an M-key NVMe slot to the Raspberry Pi 5. It accepts M.2 drives from 2230 to 2280 lengths and mounts beneath the single-board computer using the included standoffs and rubber feet. A flat-flex cable carries the PCIe signals between the base and the Pi.
Ideal for compact file servers or media centres
Makers building a NAS, reverse proxy or any workload that benefits from high random IOPS will gain fast boot and application performance. The board supports the Raspberry Pi PCIe specification and works with current Raspberry Pi OS when firmware is dated 2023-12-06 or newer. Builders who need more than one NVMe drive, or who want to use storage interfaces other than the single M-key slot provided, will not find those options here.
Single M-key NVMe slot with 2230 to 2280 support
The decisive specification is the single M-key slot that accommodates NVMe drives from 2230 up to 2280 form factors. This determines which solid-state drives can be installed and limits the board to one high-speed storage device at a time.

Questions about this item
Will the M.2 2230 to 2280 NVMe SSD need any firmware updates or maintenance after installation?
The board follows Raspberry Pi PIP design guidelines for long-term OS support; keep Raspberry Pi OS and RPi 5 firmware at 2023-12-06 or newer for hassle-free operation.
What is the first limit reached under sustained heavy I/O workloads?
The PCIe Gen 3 x1 lane caps sustained throughput, so sequential speeds and random IOPS will plateau at that interface ceiling.
How much extra heat or power does the NVMe Base add when the Pi 5 runs all day?
The board itself is passive with no active cooling; thermal load comes only from the installed NVMe SSD, which typically draws a few watts under load.
