300 kHz AC/DC current clamp for oscilloscopes

The Pintech PT-2720 is a new AC/DC current clamp probe designed for oscilloscope users who need to measure currents from .4 A to 200 A. It connects via a standard BNC connector on a 2 metre coaxial cable and operates on a 9 V battery not included in the package.

Bandwidth limited to 300 kHz with two fixed ranges

The probe provides two transformation ratios: 50 mV/A for the .4 A to 10 A range and 5 mV/A for the 10 A to 200 A range. Bandwidth extends from DC to 300 kHz at the -3 dB point, so signals with significant energy above that frequency will be attenuated. Maximum common-mode voltage is 600 Vrms and the clamp aperture accepts conductors up to 11 mm or .43 in diameter.

Simple BNC connection but battery

Installation requires only plugging the BNC into the oscilloscope and selecting the correct range switch position for the expected current. A green LED shows battery voltage above 6.5 V while a red LED warns of overload when the measured current exceeds the selected range. The 9 V battery is not supplied, so users must provide one before first use.

Questions about this item

Should I use the 50 mV/A or 5 mV/A range for my measurements?

Choose 50 mV/A for 0.4 A to 10 A peak-to-peak signals and 5 mV/A for 10 A to 200 A peak-to-peak signals.

What does the 300 kHz bandwidth mean when I connect this probe to my oscilloscope?

It means the probe accurately passes signal components from DC up to 300 kHz, with a 1.2 µs rise time, so fast transients above that frequency will be attenuated.

How does the BNC output and 1 MΩ / 100 pF load impedance affect what I can plug it into?

The insulated BNC connector and 1 MΩ // 100 pF termination are designed for standard oscilloscope inputs; with the optional MT-246N adapter it can also drive a multimeter.
