Switch purpose

The PLANET WGSW-24040 is a rack-mount Layer 2+ managed Gigabit switch with 20 dedicated RJ-45 ports plus four combo SFP slots shared with ports 21 to 24. It targets SMB networks and ISP edge deployments that require both IPv4 and IPv6 management in a single 1U appliance.

Interface limits

The 24 copper ports auto-negotiate at 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps using IEEE 802.3ab, while the four SFP interfaces accept 1000Base-SX, LX or BX modules under IEEE 802.3z. Total switching fabric reaches 32 Gbps in duplex mode, and jumbo frames up to 9000 bytes are supported across all ports.

Capacity and headroom

A 16K-entry MAC address table with automatic learning and ageing handles moderate campus or branch topologies, while 4 Mbits of buffer memory absorbs burst traffic on the store-and-forward engine. Four priority queues per port with strict or WRR scheduling and per-port rate limiting provide QoS headroom for voice and video, but the shared SFP design means fibre uplinks reduce available copper density.

Questions about this item

Should I use the 24 RJ-45 ports or the 4 shared SFP slots for my uplink connections?

Ports 21 to 24 share bandwidth with the SFP slots; choose copper for short runs or SFP fibre modules for longer links, but you cannot use both on the same port number simultaneously.

What does the 32 Gbps bandwidth figure mean for daily traffic?

It is the total switching fabric capacity in full-duplex mode, so the switch can forward wire-speed traffic across all 24 Gigabit ports without internal blocking.

Which IEEE standards limit the speed on the RJ-45 and SFP interfaces?

The RJ-45 ports follow 802.3ab for 1000Base-T and the SFP slots follow 802.3z for 1000Base-SX/LX/BX, both capping at 1 Gbps per port.
