100mm ED Spotting Scope Bundle

The Ricoh Pentax PF-100ED combines a 100mm extra-low dispersion objective lens with a straight-line barrel for bright, high-resolution viewing. A magnesium-alloy body and rubber housing keep the instrument light and shock-resistant. The bundle includes the Pentax XF zoom eyepiece, giving variable magnification for birdwatching and target practice. JIS Class 6 waterproofing and nitrogen filling prevent internal fogging in changing weather.

Practical Limits of the Optical System

The 100mm aperture gathers ample light, yet image brightness still depends on the eyepiece zoom setting and ambient conditions. At higher magnifications the exit pupil shrinks, reducing low-light performance. The straight-line barrel aids rapid target acquisition but offers no angled viewing option for prolonged observation from a fixed position. Atmospheric heat haze at long distances will ultimately limit resolvable detail regardless of the ED glass.

Deciding Specification: 100mm ED Objective

The 100mm extra-low dispersion objective is the single specification that determines whether this scope meets your needs. It delivers the light grasp and chromatic correction required for detailed spotting at distance. Buyers who need a more compact instrument for backpacking or a wider field of view at lower power should consider a smaller aperture model. The fixed straight-body format also means the eyepiece position cannot be rotated for tripod balance.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 100mm scope with the XF zoom eyepiece or a fixed-magnification eyepiece?

The bundle supplies the XF zoom eyepiece, so you can vary magnification continuously instead of swapping fixed eyepieces in the field.

What does the 100mm objective lens actually deliver when I am out birdwatching?

The 100mm aperture gathers substantially more light than smaller scopes, giving a brighter image at dawn or dusk and finer detail at long range.

What does JIS Class 6 waterproofing mean for real use?

JIS Class 6 certifies the scope against powerful water jets, so heavy rain or splashes will not penetrate the nitrogen-filled body.
