Mini-jack to XLR adapter

The Rode VXLR converts a 3.5 mm mono mini-jack into a male XLR output. It plugs straight into an on-camera microphone’s 1/8" socket. The adapter is aimed at videographers who need to feed a mini-jack microphone into a camera’s XLR input. It requires no power and adds no active circuitry.

Signal handling and channel behaviour

A mono 3.5 mm plug is carried straight through to the XLR pins. If a stereo mini-jack is inserted the adapter routes the same mono signal to both left and right channels. This means stereo separation is lost and the camera records identical audio on both tracks. The adapter does not amplify or balance the signal.

Connector-level constraints

The XLR male end fits standard three-pin camera inputs but provides no phantom-power blocking or ground-lift function. Cable length is fixed by the short adapter body, so strain relief depends on the microphone’s own lead. Users needing balanced runs, stereo preservation or phantom-power protection must look for a different interface solution.

Questions about this item

Will the VXLR let me keep using my VideoMic with a camera that only has XLR inputs?

Yes, the adapter converts the microphone's 3.5 mm mono mini-jack output to a male XLR connection so it plugs straight into the camera's XLR socket.

How can I check the adapter is passing audio correctly once I've connected everything?

Monitor the camera's audio meters or listen through headphones; a clean mono signal on both left and right channels confirms the VXLR is working as intended.

Does the package include any cables or just the adapter itself?

Only the VXLR adapter is supplied; you will need your microphone's existing 3.5 mm cable and a standard XLR cable to complete the connection.
