Desktop Gigabit switch for small wired networks

This five-port Gigabit Ethernet switch connects computers, printers and network-attached storage in a home or small-office LAN. It operates at Layer 2 with no management software required, so devices start communicating as soon as they are plugged in. The desktop or wall-mountable metal enclosure fits on a shelf or behind a monitor.

Unmanaged 10/100/1000Base-T over twisted pair

Each RJ-45 port auto-negotiates 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps speeds over standard Cat 5e or better twisted-pair cabling up to 100 metres. There is no uplink port, stacking connector or Power over Ethernet support, so every port is equal and power must come from the included external adapter. The switch forwards frames at wire speed without configuration.

Five ports give headroom for a router

With five Gigabit ports you can uplink a router and still connect four wired endpoints such as a desktop PC, a NAS, a smart TV and a game console. Bandwidth per port is dedicated, not shared, so simultaneous large-file transfers and 4K streams do not contend. The switch reaches its limit when a sixth wired device is needed or when managed features such as VLANs or QoS become necessary.

Questions about this item

All five ports are Gigabit — is there a faster uplink or combo port I should pick instead?

No, every one of the five RJ-45 ports runs at 10/100/1000Base-T and there is no dedicated uplink or combo port on this model.

The box says Gigabit Ethernet — what speed will I actually see between two PCs connected to this switch?

Each port negotiates up to 1000 Mbps full-duplex, so a direct PC-to-PC transfer can saturate a 1 Gbps link in both directions simultaneously.

Does the switch need any special cabling or configuration to reach 1000 Mbps on the twisted-pair ports?

Standard Cat 5e or better twisted-pair cable is sufficient; the switch is unmanaged and auto-negotiates 10/100/1000Base-T with no setup required.
