Cable purpose and audience

The sakose USB3-Extender is a black USB 3.0 extension cable with a male Type-A plug on one end and a female Type-A port on the other. It adds up to five metres of reach for printers, scanners, external drives or other peripherals that sit far from the host computer. The cable is aimed at home or office users who need a longer link without moving the PC.

Sustained-load behaviour

The cable complies with USB 3.0 Specification Revision 1.0 and USB 2.0 Specification Revision 2.0, supporting low-speed at 1.5 Mbps, full-speed at 12 Mbps, high-speed at 480 Mbps and super-speed at 5 Gbps. Because it is a passive copper extension, signal integrity at the highest rate depends on the quality of the host port and the attached device over the full five-metre run.

Build quality and daily use

Two moulded connectors, male to female, are finished in black and include a blue LED that shows when power is present on the bus. No driver installation is required; the cable works plug-and-play with Windows 7, XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008 in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Builders who need a longer run than five metres or who require active signal boosting will need a different solution.

Questions about this item

Does the 5 metre length add noticeable latency or power drop when the extender runs all day?

The cable meets USB 3.0 Spec Rev 1.0 and USB 2.0 Spec Rev 2.0, supporting Super-speed 5 Gbps, High-speed 480 Mbps, Full-speed 12 Mbps and Low-speed 1.5 Mbps without extra drivers.

What must my computer already have for this male-to-female USB A extender to work?

A desktop or laptop with an available USB port; USB 3.0 is recommended for full 5 Gbps throughput.

Will the extender work with my older Windows XP or Vista machine that only has USB 2.0 ports?

Yes, it is backward-compliant to USB 2.0 Spec Rev 2.0 and lists Windows XP, Vista, 7, Server 2003 and Server 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit) as supported.
