Samsung PM981a 1TB NVMe SSD

The Samsung PM981a is a 1TB internal solid-state drive built on the M.2 2280 form factor. It uses a PCI Express 3.0 x4 interface with NVMe protocol and TLC NAND flash. The drive ships new with firmware EXF7201Q and includes no cables or manuals.

Suits PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slots.

This drive fits laptops or desktops that accept an M.2 2280 module with PCIe 3.0 x4 electrical connection. It will not work in slots limited to other bus types or smaller M.2 lengths. Buyers must verify the original part number matches MZVLB1T0HBLR-00000 or the listed compatible number.

PCIe 3.0 x4 interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines fit is the PCI Express 3.0 x4 interface combined with the M.2 2280 form factor. Only systems providing that exact electrical and physical interface can use this SSD. Check your device documentation before ordering.

Questions about this item

How do I install the PM981a M.2 2280 drive and what step is often missed?

Insert the M.2 2280 card into a PCI Express 3.0 x4 slot at a slight angle, press down, and secure it with the motherboard screw; the step often missed is enabling the NVMe option in the BIOS before the OS will see the drive.

What maintenance or replacement will the TLC NAND require over time?

TLC NAND has a finite write endurance; the drive will eventually need replacement once its program/erase cycles are exhausted, though the controller manages wear levelling automatically to extend usable life.

What limit appears first during sustained heavy writes on this PCI Express 3.0 x4 drive?

The PCI Express 3.0 x4 interface caps sequential throughput, so sustained write speeds will hit that bus ceiling before the internal NAND becomes the bottleneck.
