256 GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive

The SanDisk Ultra Flair provides 256 GB of portable storage with a USB 3.0 interface. It is suited for students, office workers and photographers who need to move large files between computers quickly. The metal casing protects the drive during daily transport in a bag or pocket. Password protection with 128-bit AES encryption keeps private documents secure on shared machines.

USB 3.0 Interface Limits

Read speeds reach up to 150 MB/s when connected to a USB 3.0 port, while write speeds vary by capacity and host device. A USB 3.0 port is required to achieve the advertised performance; on USB 2.0 ports the drive falls back to much lower throughput. Transfer of a 1.2 GB MPEG-4 movie can complete in under 30 seconds under ideal conditions. Actual speeds depend on the host controller, file types and system load.

Metal Casing And Software Security

The sleek metal housing resists dents and scratches better than plastic alternatives, making it reliable for everyday carry. SanDisk SecureAccess software enables password-protected folders using 128-bit AES encryption; the software runs on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and macOS 10.9 or later. Mac users must download the utility from the SanDisk support page before use. The retractable connector eliminates the need for a separate cap.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 256 GB Ultra Flair or a smaller capacity in the same series?

The 256 GB model delivers up to 150 MB/s read speed; smaller capacities in the SDCZ73 line may have lower write performance, so choose 256 GB if you need the fastest transfers.

What does the 150 MB/s read figure mean when I plug the drive into my laptop?

You can move a 1.2 GB MPEG-4 movie to the drive in under 30 seconds on a USB 3.0 port; actual speed varies with host device, file type and other conditions.

The drive uses USB 3.0 — what does that limit in everyday use?

USB 3.0 caps the maximum throughput at the drive’s rated 150 MB/s read; on a USB 2.0 port speeds drop to the 4 MB/s level of standard 2.0 drives.
