77mm Hollywood Black Magic 1/8 Filter

The Schneider 77mm Hollywood Black Magic 1/8 filter is a diffusion accessory designed for cinematographers and photographers who want a cinematic look straight from the lens. It softens skin by reducing the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles while adding a subtle glow to highlights. The filter blends HD Classic Soft and Black Frost technologies to smooth the harsh digital edge of high-resolution capture. It maintains rich blacks and vibrant colours throughout the frame.

Suited for narrative and portrait work needing

This filter suits filmmakers and photographers working with 4k or 8k cameras who want to soften excessive sharpness without losing contrast or colour depth. The 1/8 grade provides a consistent, subtle halation across highlights for a natural filmic aesthetic. It is not for buyers who need a stronger diffusion grade for a more pronounced glow. It is also not for shooters who require a perfectly clinical, unaltered digital image for technical documentation.

Consistent highlight roll-off under continuous use

Under sustained shooting conditions the filter delivers a stable, repeatable halation effect that does not shift as the lens heats up. The smooth transition in highlights remains even at higher diffusion strengths, preventing the digital artefacts that can appear during long takes. The airbrushed texture on skin tones holds consistently across a scene. Rich blacks and saturated colours are preserved without the contrast loss sometimes seen with heavy diffusion over time.

Questions about this item

What lens thread size do I need for the 77mm Hollywood Black Magic 1/8 filter to fit?

The filter screws directly onto any lens with a 77mm front thread, no step-up or step-down ring required.

Will the 1/8 grade diffusion change how my older manual-focus lenses render highlights?

It adds a subtle halation glow around bright highlights while keeping blacks and colours rich, so vintage glass gains a softer, more filmic character without losing contrast.

How can I verify the filter is performing correctly once mounted?

Point the camera at a specular highlight; you should see a smooth, even glow spreading from the highlight with no hard edge, while skin texture appears softened and colours stay saturated.
