SKU CH-WK6B-9YQNA

A 3 TB 2.5 inch SATA internal hard drive with 5400 RPM speed and 128 MB cache for desktop storage

  • 3 TB capacity stores large media libraries
  • 5 inch form factor fits compact desktop builds
  • 128 MB cache accelerates read and write performance
  • SATA 6 Gb/s interface provides broad motherboard compatibility
  • 5400 RPM spindle speed balances throughput and quiet operation

Purpose and audience

This 3TB 2.5 inch SATA hard drive suits desktop builders who need large capacity in a compact form factor. It spins at 5400 RPM with 128 MB cache to handle everyday workloads, media libraries and gaming installs. The drive targets users who value proven BarraCuda reliability and a two-year limited warranty backed by 20 years of hard drive innovation.

Fit and alternatives

Creative professionals running multiple design, audio or video applications will benefit from the optimized read-write caching technology. Buyers who require a 3.5 inch form factor or higher spindle speeds should consider a different drive. Systems limited to older SATA revisions will still work but at reduced throughput.

Deciding specification

The 2.5 inch physical size combined with a SATA 6Gb/s interface determines whether this drive fits your chassis and motherboard. Verify that your desktop has a 2.5 inch bay or an appropriate adapter before purchase. The 3TB capacity and 5400 RPM speed are fixed characteristics that define the storage density and performance envelope.

Questions about this item

Does the SATA 6 Gb/s interface limit the BarraCuda 3TB drive to 6 Gb/s in practice?

The drive uses a SATA 6 Gb/s interface, so the theoretical ceiling is 6 Gb/s. Real-world throughput is lower and depends on the 5400 RPM platters and 128 MB cache.

What physical space and mounting points does the 2.5 inch BarraCuda need?

It requires a standard 2.5 inch drive bay with SATA data and power connectors. The 7 mm z-height fits most laptop caddies and desktop brackets.

How do I install the ST3000LM024, and which step is often missed?

Secure the drive in the bay, attach both SATA data and power cables, then initialise and format the 3000 GB volume in Disk Management — the formatting step is frequently skipped.
