Exos 7E8 SAS drive for enterprise arrays

The Seagate Exos 7E8 ST8000NM006A is an 8TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive built for 24×7 enterprise storage workloads. It connects via a SAS 12Gb/s interface and spins at 7200 RPM with a 256MB cache to deliver consistent throughput in replicated and RAID multi-drive systems. The drive uses field-proven conventional magnetic recording technology and carries a 2 million hour MTBF rating with a 550TB per year workload limit.

Suited for bulk data centres not desktop PCs

This drive targets data centre architects and IT professionals who need high-capacity, cost-effective bulk storage for unstructured data in always-on environments. It includes encryption features and rotational vibration safeguards for dense multi-drive deployments. Buyers looking for a desktop or consumer-grade drive with lower annualised workload limits should consider a different product class.

SAS 12Gb/s interface dictates controller choice

The single specification that decides compatibility is the SAS 12Gb/s interface, which requires a matching host bus adapter or RAID controller and backplane that support this protocol and speed. Systems without SAS infrastructure cannot install or operate this drive. Confirm your chassis and controller support 12Gb/s SAS before purchase.

Questions about this item

How does the 8TB capacity hold up in a real 24×7 enterprise server?

The drive is rated for 550TB per year workloads, far above desktop limits, and uses 10th-generation CMR technology to maintain consistent throughput under constant read or write cycles.

What does the SAS 12Gb/s interface actually limit in practice?

The 12Gb/s SAS link sets the maximum burst transfer rate; sustained speeds will be lower and depend on the controller, cable length, and RAID topology.

What physical space and mounting does the 3.5" bare drive require?

It fits any standard 3.5-inch drive bay or hot-swap carrier using the industry-standard SAS connector and screw-hole pattern.
