Capacity and interface

The Seagate Exos X18 ST12000NM001J is a 12 TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive with a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and 256 MB cache. It spins at 7200 RPM and uses conventional magnetic recording for consistent write performance. The drive is built for storage systems and video surveillance devices that need high-capacity, always-on operation. Seagate Secure adds hardware-based encryption for data-at-rest protection.

Upgrade path and value

This model replaces lower-capacity 7200 RPM SATA drives when a single bay must hold more data without adding spindles. The jump is worth it when rack space or drive slots are limited and the workload benefits from the 270 MB/s maximum read transfer rate. Helium sealing reduces weight and power per terabyte, which helps total cost of ownership in large deployments. The five-year warranty reflects the enterprise design target.

Fit and alternatives

The drive suits system integrators and IT teams building high-density arrays, NAS appliances or surveillance recorders that accept 3.5-inch SATA drives. Buyers who need a smaller form factor or a different interface should look elsewhere. Workloads that demand solid-state latency or portable external use are not a match for this mechanical enterprise unit.

Questions about this item

Does the 3.5" form factor fit a standard desktop drive bay?

Yes, the 3.5" form factor matches standard desktop drive bays and uses the common SATA interface for both data and power connections.

What is the correct way to connect the SATA data and power cables?

Attach the SATA data cable to the motherboard SATA port and the SATA power connector from the power supply; the drive is recognised once both are firmly seated.

When should the helium-sealed drive be replaced?

The helium-sealed design has no user-serviceable parts; replace the drive if SMART attributes report reallocated sectors or if the five-year warranty period expires.
