500 GB 2.5″ SATA laptop drive

The Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS is a 500 GB internal hard drive built for 2.5″ SATA bays in laptops and compact desktops. It spins at 5400 RPM with an 8 MB cache and a 3 Gb/s SATA interface. The bare-drive package suits system builders and upgraders who need straightforward capacity.

Installation notes and common issues

The drive fits any standard 2.5″ SATA slot and requires only the usual data and power cables. No special drivers are needed; the OS will recognise it on first boot. The bare-drive shipment means mounting screws and a caddy are not included, so reuse existing hardware or source them separately. Handle the exposed PCB carefully to avoid static damage.

Capacity fit and limits

Five hundred gigabytes holds an operating system, everyday applications and a moderate media library with room to spare. The 5400 RPM spindle and 8 MB buffer keep routine file access responsive, though sustained transfers and heavy random I/O will hit the mechanical ceiling sooner than faster drives. Users working with large video projects or extensive game libraries will find the space and throughput limiting.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the ST9500325AS is recognised at its full 500GB capacity after installation?

Enter the system BIOS or UEFI and verify the drive appears as ST9500325AS with 500GB shown; then initialise and format it in the operating system so the full space becomes usable.

What comes with the ST9500325AS and what must I supply myself?

The package contains only the bare 2.5" SATA drive; you must provide mounting screws, a SATA data cable, a SATA power connection and any 2.5-to-3.5" adapter bracket your chassis requires.

Which version of the Momentus 5400.6 line should I choose for a laptop that only supports SATA 3Gb/s?

The ST9500325AS is the 500GB, 5400RPM, 8MB cache model built for the 3Gb/s SATA interface, matching that laptop's limit exactly.
