500 GB 2.5" SATA 7200 rpm drive

This new Seagate Momentus ST9500423AS provides 500 GB of storage in a 2.5 inch form factor. It spins at 7200 rpm with a 16 MB buffer and connects via a SATA 300 interface. The drive supports hot-plug capability for compatible systems.

Not for users needing faster transfer rates

Buyers who want higher interface speeds or larger capacities should look at other options. This drive is also unsuitable for anyone requiring a 3.5 inch form factor or a non-SATA interface.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5" SATA drive in a desktop bay and what step is often missed?

Mount the 2.5" unit in a 3.5" adapter or dedicated bracket, connect the SATA data and power cables, then enable the new volume in Disk Management — the step most people skip is initialising and formatting the 500 GB capacity before use.

What maintenance or replacement will the 7200 rpm SATA drive need over time?

The 16 MB buffer and mechanical platters require no scheduled service; plan to replace the ST9500423AS if SMART attributes show reallocated sectors, unusual seek noise, or sustained throughput drops below expected SATA 300 levels.
