Seagate Portable 1 TB USB 3.0 Drive

This 1 TB external hard drive stores personal files and backups while travelling. It works with Windows or Mac computers and is also recognised by PlayStation and Xbox consoles. The drive arrives ready to use with no extra software installation required.

USB 3.0 interface limits

The included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable provides plug-and-play connectivity at the standard USB 3.0 data rate. Transfer speeds will fall back to USB 2.0 levels if the host port is an older revision. Mechanical hard drives also introduce latency that solid-state alternatives do not have.

Check host ports and formatting

Verify the computer or console has a free USB-A port that can supply enough bus power for the drive. macOS may require reformatting before the volume can be used for drag-and-drop backup. No separate power adapter is included in the package.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 1TB capacity or a larger drive?

The drive supplies 1TB of storage; pick a larger model only if you expect to exceed that amount.

What does the USB 3.0 connection mean for real-world transfer speed?

USB 3.0 caps the interface at 5 Gbit/s, so sustained throughput will be limited by the mechanical drive inside rather than the port.

Does the included 18 inch cable restrict where I can place the drive?

The 18 inch USB 3.0 cable keeps the drive close to the host port; use a longer certified cable if you need more reach.
