Seagate Savvio 10K.5 900 GB SAS Drive

The Seagate Savvio 10K.5 ST9900805SS is a new 2.5-inch internal hard drive with a 900 GB capacity and a 10000 RPM spindle speed. It connects via a 6 Gbps SAS interface and includes a 64 MB cache buffer. The small form factor suits laptops, desktops or small business servers needing fast mechanical storage.

Who This Suits and Who Should Look Elsewhere

This drive fits builders adding high-speed capacity to SAS-capable laptops, desktops or entry servers where a 2.5-inch bay is available. It is not for systems lacking a SAS controller or a physical 2.5-inch mount, nor for users who need more than 900 GB on a single spindle.

Deciding Specification: 10000 RPM Spindle Speed

The 10000 RPM rotation speed determines the drive's average latency of 3 ms and its ability to find, open and save files quickly. That speed makes the unit suitable for transactional workloads, gaming installs or general responsiveness gains over slower mechanical disks.

Questions about this item

What physical space and mounting does the 2.5-inch SFF Savvio 10K.5 require in a desktop chassis?

The 2.5-inch SFF form factor fits a laptop bay directly; in a desktop or all-in-one you need a 2.5-to-3.5-inch installation kit to secure the 7.23-ounce drive so it cannot shift if the system is jarred.

What is the correct SAS host connection step that is often missed when installing the ST9900805SS?

Attach the drive to a SAS host bus adapter or RAID controller using a SAS data cable; the 6 Gbps interface requires a SAS-capable port to operate.

Which moving component in the 10000 RPM Savvio drive will eventually need replacement?

The mechanical spindle and actuator assembly inside the 900 GB SAS hard drive will wear over time and ultimately require drive replacement.
