Capacity and speed

This is a 1.8TB 2.5-inch SAS hard drive spinning at 10000RPM. It uses a 6Gb/s interface and Advanced Format 512e sectors. The drive is supplied new as a bare unit without brackets or cables. It fits servers and storage arrays that accept 2.5-inch SAS devices.

Server and array builders

The drive suits administrators who need high spindle speed and SAS connectivity in a small form factor. It is not for systems that lack a SAS controller or backplane. Buyers who want more storage capacity or the lower power draw of solid-state media should consider other options.

10000RPM spindle speed

The 10000RPM rotation rate is the key specification that determines whether this drive meets the performance envelope of the target workload. It delivers faster random access than slower nearline drives while remaining a mechanical device. Verify that the host system supports 2.5-inch SAS 6Gb/s drives before purchase.

Questions about this item

Does the ST1800MM0018 43N12 need a SAS controller or backplane to operate?

Yes, this drive uses a 2.5" SAS 6Gb/s interface so it must connect to a compatible SAS HBA, RAID card or server backplane.

Can this 10000RPM SAS drive share a backplane with older 3Gb/s SAS disks?

The 6Gb/s link will negotiate down to 3Gb/s when paired with legacy drives on the same backplane.

How do I confirm the 1.8TB Advanced Format drive is recognised at full capacity after install?

Check the OS disk utility or RAID BIOS — it should report the full 1.8TB capacity with 512e sector emulation active.
