Seagate 500 GB 3.5" SATA drive

The Seagate ST3500312CS is a 500 GB hard disk spinning at 5900 RPM with an 8 MB cache. It uses a standard 3Gbps SATA interface and a 3.5 inch form factor. The unit is supplied as a new OEM drive with zero recorded operating hours.

Suitable for bulk storage upgrades

This drive suits desktop owners who need affordable extra capacity for documents, backups or media archives. It is not intended for builders who require faster random access or higher sustained transfer rates. Laptop users should look elsewhere because the 3.5 inch size will not fit a 2.5 inch bay. Systems without a free SATA port or 3.5 inch mounting space cannot use this drive.

5900 RPM spindle speed

The 5900 RPM rotation speed is the single figure that determines whether this drive meets your performance target. It delivers lower noise and power draw than faster-spinning disks but also lower sequential and random throughput. If your application demands the quicker response of a higher RPM or solid-state device, this model will not satisfy that requirement.

Questions about this item

Does the 500GB 3.5" SATA drive ship with any cables or mounting hardware?

The drive is supplied as an OEM unit without cables or brackets; a SATA data cable and a SATA power lead must be sourced separately.

Should I choose the 500GB 5900RPM model or a higher-capacity version for a DVR?

This specific model is 500GB at 5900RPM; if more recording space is needed, select a larger-capacity drive with the same 3.5" SATA form factor.

What does the 5900RPM figure mean for sustained write speed in a security recorder?

At 5900RPM with an 8MB cache, the drive delivers steady sequential throughput suitable for multiple simultaneous video streams.
