500 GB Barracuda desktop hard drive

The Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 is a 500 GB hard drive built for desktop PCs, all-in-one systems and home servers. It spins at 7200 RPM with a 16 MB buffer to handle everyday workloads and PC-based gaming storage. The drive fits a standard 3.5-inch bay and connects through a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface with NCQ support.

SATA 6.0Gb/s interface ceiling

The SATA 6.0Gb/s link sets the maximum transfer rate for this drive. Sequential throughput will not exceed the bus limit, and random I/O is constrained by the 7200 RPM spindle and 16 MB cache. Systems without a SATA controller or cables cannot use the drive at all.

3.5-inch bay mounting and cable needs

Mechanical mounting requires an available 3.5-inch drive bay and four screws. Daily operation draws 0.72 A on the 5 V rail and 0.52 A on the 12 V rail from the power supply. A SATA data cable and a SATA power cable must be present for installation. The drive carries CE, TUV, WEEE, BSMI and C-Tick approvals.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 500 GB version or a different capacity for my desktop?

The ST500DM002 is offered in a single 500 GB capacity, so there is no alternative capacity to select for this model.

What does the 7200 RPM spindle speed mean for everyday desktop use?

A 7200 RPM spindle speed gives faster sequential read and write performance than slower drives, reducing load times for games and applications on a desktop PC.

The drive uses a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface — what does that cap in practice?

The SATA 6.0Gb/s interface limits the maximum theoretical transfer rate to 6.0 Gb/s, and actual throughput will be lower due to protocol overhead and drive mechanics.
