  • 500 GB capacity stores large media libraries

  • 8 MB buffer smooths burst read and write operations
  • Slim 2.5 inch form factor fits standard drive bays

Capacity and fit

The Seagate ST500LM012 is a 2.5in internal hard drive with 500 GB of storage spinning at 5400 rpm. It suits laptop upgrades, external enclosures or compact desktops that need a standard SATA drive. The 8 MB buffer handles everyday read and write tasks.

Compatibility checklist

Verify that your system has a free 2.5in drive bay or a suitable caddy for the 3.9in depth. Confirm the motherboard or controller provides a SATA 300 port and that a SATA power connector is available. The drive height is .4in so slim chassis should accept it.

Build integration

The SATA interface connects directly to the board without extra adapters. At 3.77 oz the drive adds minimal weight to a portable build. It leaves M.2 slots open for faster boot drives while providing bulk capacity for files and backups.

Questions about this item

Does the ST500LM012 ship with a SATA data cable or mounting screws, or do I need to buy them separately?

The drive is supplied in retail or OEM packaging that may vary; cables and screws are not included and must be sourced separately.

How do I decide between the 500 GB capacity and a larger drive for my laptop upgrade?

Choose 500 GB when you need a low-cost replacement for a 2.5 in bay and your OS plus core apps fit within that space; larger capacities cost more per gigabyte only if you need extra room for media libraries.

What does the 5400 rpm rating mean for everyday boot and application load times?

At 5400 rpm with an 8 MB buffer the drive delivers typical mechanical-disk responsiveness — fast enough for office work and media playback, slower than solid-state storage for random access.
