500 GB SATA HDD for enterprise storage

The Seagate Constellation ST500NM0011 is a 3.5-inch hard drive with 500 GB capacity, 7200 RPM spindle speed and 64 MB cache. It uses a SATA 6 Gb/s interface and is rated for hot-swap operation. The drive is supplied new with zero power-on hours and targets always-on server or NAS workloads.

Check SATA port and hot-swap support

Verify that the host system has a free SATA 6 Gb/s port and that the backplane or drive cage supports hot-swap insertion if you plan to use that feature. Confirm the operating system or RAID controller can address a 500 GB SATA block device. Ensure the chassis provides a 3.5-inch drive bay with adequate airflow for continuous operation.

Fits 3.5-inch hot-swap bays in servers or NAS

The drive slides into standard 3.5-inch hot-swap trays, drawing power and data through the combined SATA connector without extra cabling. Its hot-swap capability lets you replace or add storage without shutting down the array. The 64 MB cache helps absorb write bursts, freeing the controller for other I/O tasks.

Questions about this item

Does the ST500NM0011 come with cables or brackets, or must they be purchased separately?

The drive is supplied as a bare 3.5" SATA unit; SATA data and power cables plus any mounting brackets are not included and must be bought separately.

Is the 500 GB 7200 RPM model the only capacity available in this Constellation line?

This listing covers the 500 GB version with 64 MB cache; other capacities exist in the Constellation family but are separate part numbers.

How does the 6 Gb/s SATA link perform inside a typical desktop or server?

The 7200 RPM platters and 64 MB cache deliver sustained transfers near the SATA 6 Gb/s ceiling, limited by mechanical throughput rather than the interface.
