Enterprise 8TB 7200 RPM SATA Drive

The Seagate ST8000NM0045 is an 8TB 3.5-inch enterprise hard drive built for bulk-data applications. It spins at 7200 RPM with a 256MB cache and uses a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface. The drive employs CMR technology and a six-disk design to deliver high capacity in a standard slot. It is engineered for continuous 24x7 workloads of 550TB per year.

Suited for RAID and multi-drive storage servers

This drive fits replicated and RAID multi-drive storage servers and systems that accept a 3.5-inch SATA device. It supports 4Kn, 512e and 512n sector formats for integration flexibility. It is not for buyers who need a 2.5-inch form factor or a SAS 12Gb/s interface. It is also not for users requiring a non-enterprise desktop drive with a lower workload rating.

Deciding specification: 4Kn sector format

The drive presents a 4Kn native sector size, which determines compatibility with the host controller and operating system. Systems expecting 512-byte logical sectors will require 512e emulation support or a 512n model instead. Verify that the storage platform accepts 4Kn drives before purchasing.

Questions about this item

Will the 256 MB cache need any maintenance or replacement during the drive's life?

The 256 MB cache is an integral part of the drive's controller board and does not require separate maintenance or replacement.

Which limit appears first during sustained 24x7 operation — the 550 TB per year workload rating or the 7200 RPM mechanical speed?

The 550 TB per year workload rating is the specified endurance limit for continuous operation; the 7200 RPM spindle speed remains constant.

How much heat and power does the 3.5-inch 8 TB drive produce when running all day in a multi-drive chassis?

The drive includes on-demand PowerBalance and humidity-sensor features to manage power and thermal output in dense 24x7 environments.
