Seagate 300 GB SAS drive

The Seagate SAVVIO ST9300605SS is a 2.5 inch internal hard drive built for servers and storage arrays that need fast, reliable access to 300 GB of data. It suits administrators who run transactional workloads or high-IOPS databases on SAS infrastructure.

SAS 6 Gbps interface and 10K RPM

The 6 Gbps SAS connection plugs directly into compatible backplanes and RAID controllers without adapters. A 64 MB buffer and 10000 RPM spindle speed combine to deliver consistent throughput for random read and write patterns in multi-drive enclosures.

Mechanical limits of 10K RPM SAS

Rotational latency and seek time are fixed by the 10000 RPM mechanism so sustained transfer rates cannot exceed the physical limits of the platters. The drive is not suited for workloads that demand the low latency or parallelism of solid-state storage.

Questions about this item

What is the SAS interface speed on the ST9300605SS and what does it cap in practice?

The drive uses a 6 Gbps SAS interface, which caps the peak bus transfer rate at that signalling speed.

What physical space and mounting does the 2.5-inch SAS drive require?

It fits a standard 2.5-inch drive bay and uses the SAS connector for both data and power.

How is the ST9300605SS installed and what step is often missed?

Slide the bare drive into the bay, secure it with screws, then attach the SAS data and power cable firmly.
