  • 16 MB cache improves burst read performance
  • 5 inch form factor fits dense server bays

Capacity and interface

The Seagate ST9600204SS is a new 600 GB internal hard drive with a 2.5 inch SAS 6 Gb/s interface. It spins at 10 000 RPM and provides a 16 MB buffer for enterprise workloads. The drive uses PowerChoice technology to manage power during idle periods.

Server and array builders

This drive suits administrators who need a 2.5 inch SAS drive for 10 000 RPM performance in storage arrays or servers. It is not for systems that lack a SAS backplane or controller. Buyers who need a larger capacity or a different physical format should look at other models.

6 Gb/s SAS interface

The single specification that decides fit is the 6 Gb/s SAS interface. The drive must connect to a compatible SAS controller or backplane to operate. Verify that the host system provides this exact interface before purchase.

Questions about this item

How much usable space does the 600 GB capacity provide in a RAID array?

The drive presents 600 GB of raw capacity; usable space depends on the RAID level and controller overhead, not on the drive itself.

What throughput limit does the SAS 6 Gb/s interface impose?

The interface caps the maximum burst transfer rate at 6 Gb/s; sustained throughput is lower and set by the 10000 RPM platters and 16 MB cache.

What mounting hardware does the 2.5 inch form factor require?

The drive fits any 2.5 inch SAS bay or tray that accepts a standard 2.5 inch SAS connector; no proprietary brackets are needed.
