Seagate Game Drive for Xbox

This external hard drive adds 2 TB of storage to Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. It connects through a USB 3.0 port and is formatted for immediate use with Xbox games and downloadable content. The compact design makes it easy to carry between different setups.

Upgrading from a full internal drive

When the console's built-in storage is exhausted, this drive lets you keep existing titles installed while adding new ones. The upgrade is worthwhile whenever deleting games to make room becomes a regular annoyance. It does not replace the internal drive or improve load times beyond the USB interface limits.

Limits of the USB 3.0 interface

Transfer speeds are bounded by the USB 3.0 connection, so large titles take longer to move than on the console's internal bus. The drive requires a free USB port and draws power from it, so it cannot be used on a port that cannot supply enough current. It is not designed for use as a primary boot device or for non-Xbox systems without reformatting.

Questions about this item

Does the STEA2000417 need an external power adapter or does it run from the USB 3.0 port alone?

The drive is bus-powered over USB 3.0, so no separate power supply is required.

What is the first formatting step after plugging the Game Drive into an Xbox Series X?

The console will prompt you to format the drive for games and apps; accept that prompt before moving any titles.

If the USB cable frays, can I replace it with any standard cable?

Use a USB 3.0 Micro-B cable of good quality; cheaper charge-only cables will not carry data.
