  • Stainless steel L-bracket and SO-239 connector simplify installation
  • 9 m end-fed half-wave whip designed for sailboat mast mounting

Mast-mount VHF antenna for AIS transceivers

The Shakespeare 5215-AIS is a 3-foot end-fed half-wave stainless steel whip built for sailboat masthead mounting. It delivers 3 dB gain on the VHF marine band with extra bandwidth for popular AIS transceivers and comes with a stainless steel L-shaped bracket for installation.

Check connector and power handling before fitting

Verify that your AIS transceiver uses an SO-239 connector to match the antenna ferrule. Confirm the radio output does not exceed 50 watts, the antenna’s maximum input power, and note the whip has no DC ground so it will read open on a continuity test.

Suits sailboat owners adding AIS to an existing

This single-section antenna is aimed at sailors who need a lightweight, low-profile masthead whip for AIS transceivers. Boaters requiring higher gain, a longer whip, DC-grounded construction or a different mounting style should consider other models.

Questions about this item

Does the antenna come with mounting hardware and a connector, or do I need to buy them separately?

An L-shaped stainless steel bracket and retaining nut are supplied, and the ferrule has a built-in SO-239 connector, so no extra mounting parts are required.

The model is listed as a single 3-foot 3dB version — how do I decide if this gain suits my sailboat mast installation?

The 3 dB gain and 7 MHz bandwidth within 2.0:1 VSWR are tailored for AIS transceivers on sailboat mastheads, providing a low-profile, omnidirectional pattern.

What does the 3 dB gain figure mean when the antenna is mounted on my mast and connected to a 50-watt VHF radio?

At 162 MHz the antenna delivers a nominal 1.5:1 SWR, radiates vertically with 50-ohm impedance, and handles up to 50 watts input power for AIS and VHF use.
