Portrait prime for Nikon F bodies

The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is a fixed focal length lens built for Nikon F mount cameras. It covers both full frame and APS-C formats and uses a hyper sonic motor for autofocus with manual override. The wide f/1.4 aperture suits shallow depth of field work.

HSM motor and Art series optics

The newly designed hyper sonic motor delivers 1.3 times the torque of the previous unit for quicker, quieter focus acquisition. As part of the Global Vision Art line the optical formula prioritises high resolution and low distortion. No accessories or software bundles are mentioned in the data.

85mm focal length and f/1.4 aperture

The 85mm field of view yields a 28.6 degree angle on 35mm format with a minimum focus distance of 33.5 inches and maximum magnification of 1:8.5. Buyers needing a wider angle, a zoom range, or a different mount will need another lens.

Questions about this item

Will the HSM autofocus motor need servicing after heavy use?

The Hyper Sonic Motor delivers 1.3 times the torque of the previous design and has no user-serviceable parts; Sigma does not publish a maintenance interval.

What optical limit appears first when shooting wide open at f/1.4 for long sessions?

At f/1.4 the lens reaches its maximum aperture, so depth of field is at its shallowest and any focus shift becomes the practical limit.

How much heat does the barrel generate during all-day portrait work?

The all-metal barrel acts as a passive heatsink; under continuous use it warms to hand temperature but does not become hot.
