Questions about this item

What does the 5 Gbps rating mean when I plug this cable into my computer?

It sets the maximum theoretical throughput for USB 3.0 SuperSpeed transfers. Actual speeds depend on the host controller, the connected device and the type of data being moved.

Which USB standard does the male-to-male connector follow and what does that limit?

The cable is built to the USB 3.0 specification, so it caps at 5 Gbps and will fall back to USB 2.0 or 1.1 speeds when used with older ports.
