40GBase-X dual-port server adapter

The Solarflare SFN8542 is a 40GBase-X network interface card built for high-throughput server environments. It connects through a PCI Express 3.1 x16 slot and provides two 40 gigabit Ethernet ports for demanding data-centre workloads.

Suits bandwidth-heavy servers, not desktop PCs

This adapter targets servers and storage clusters that need sustained 40 GbE throughput over twin ports. Workstations or desktops without a full-length PCIe 3.1 x16 slot and matching 40 GbE switching infrastructure should consider lower-speed alternatives.

Dual 40GBase-X ports decide fit

The decisive specification is the pair of 40GBase-X ports delivered through a single PCIe 3.1 x16 interface. If the deployment requires exactly two 40 gigabit links in one slot, this card matches; otherwise a different port count or speed is needed.

Questions about this item

What PCIe slot size and generation does my motherboard need for this SFN8542 adapter?

The card requires a PCI Express 3.1 x16 slot to deliver its 40GBase-X throughput.

Will this dual-port 40GbE adapter share bandwidth with other PCIe 3.1 devices on my server?

Each port runs at 40GBase-X over the x16 link, so total I/O stays within the 16 GT/s lane budget of PCIe 3.1.

How can I verify both 40GbE ports are active after installing the SFN8542?

Check the OS network stack for two 40GBase-X interfaces and confirm link lights show active on each SFP+ cage.
