Sony D8 tape media

The Sony QGD160M//A2 is an 8mm data cartridge designed for backup and archival storage. It provides a native 7 GB capacity that doubles to 14 GB with hardware compression. The cartridge uses D8 format technology for sequential read and write operations. One cartridge is included in each pack.

Suited for D8 drive owners

This media suits users with existing D8 tape drives who need replacement or additional cartridges for routine backups. It is not for buyers who require higher-capacity tapes such as LTO formats. It is not for systems that lack an 8mm D8 drive mechanism. It is not for users who need random-access or solid-state storage speeds.

7/14 GB capacity per cartridge

The decisive specification is the 7 GB native and 14 GB compressed capacity per cartridge. This figure determines how many cartridges a backup set will require. Verify that your drive supports D8 media before purchase. The cartridge is sold new in a single-unit pack.

Questions about this item

Does the 8 mm D8 cartridge generate noticeable heat or noise during a full 14 GB backup run?

The tape itself is passive media; any heat or noise comes from the drive mechanism, not from the cartridge.

What drive do I need to write to this 7/14 GB D8 tape?

You need an 8 mm D8-compatible tape drive that supports the 7 GB native / 14 GB compressed format.

Can I read these tapes on an older 8 mm drive that only handles 2 GB or 5 GB cartridges?

Older 8 mm drives that do not support the D8 format cannot read or write these 7/14 GB cartridges.
