A full-frame 90 mm medium telephoto macro lens with built-in image stabilisation for sharp 1:1 magnification handheld, plus a 9-blade circular aperture for smooth bokeh
The Sony SEL90M28G is a full-frame 90 mm f/2.8 medium-telephoto macro lens built for E-mount mirrorless cameras. It achieves 1:1 magnification with built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation for sharp handheld close-ups. Advanced optics and coatings plus a nine-blade circular aperture produce the smooth bokeh expected from Sony G-series glass.
Photographers who need true life-size reproduction for product, nature or scientific work will benefit from the 1:1 capability and stabilisation. Portrait users gain a flattering 90 mm field of view with creamy background rendering. Videographers requiring powered zoom, internal focus breathing correction or weather-sealed construction should consider alternatives that provide those features.
The defining specification is the combination of 1:1 macro reproduction and in-lens Optical SteadyShot, allowing sharp, full-frame close-ups without a tripod. This single trait decides whether the lens matches a workflow centred on handheld macro detail or if a non-stabilised or lower-magnification optic would suffice.

Align the white mounting index on the lens barrel with the matching mark on the camera’s E-mount, then twist clockwise until it locks with a click; the step many forget is removing both the rear lens cap and the body cap before mating the two surfaces.
Wipe the front and rear glass with a microfibre cloth and blower after each session, check the focus and OSS switches for smooth operation, and have a technician re-lubricate the focus helicoid if the ring stiffens after extended use.
At 1:1 magnification the effective aperture narrows, so the f/2.8 setting transmits less light; you’ll hit shutter-speed limits first in dim conditions, requiring higher ISO or a tripod to maintain sharpness.
