What It Is

The Spyderco Dog Tag is a non-locking folding knife with a 1.23-inch CPM S30V plain-edge blade and a carbon-fiber handle shaped like a military dog tag. It weighs 0.31 lb and measures 3.23 inches overall. The slip-joint mechanism holds the blade open with spring pressure rather than a lock, making it a compact cutting tool for everyday carry where locking folders are restricted.

Installation And Common Issues

There is no installation required; the knife arrives assembled and ready to use. The round hole in the blade allows one-handed opening, but the slip-joint provides no positive lock, so the blade can close if pressed hard against resistance. Users accustomed to locking folders must adjust grip and cutting angle to avoid accidental closure during heavy push cuts.

Sustained Use Behaviour

The CPM S30V steel holds a keen edge through extended cutting sessions and resists corrosion with its stonewashed finish. Carbon-fiber scales stay cool in the hand and add virtually no weight during prolonged carry. Because the detent relies on a steel ball bearing in an integral handle bar, the opening action remains consistent over time, though the non-locking design limits the force you can safely apply in long, demanding cuts.

Questions about this item

How do I confirm the 1.23-inch CPM S30V PlainEdge blade opens smoothly and locks open via spring pressure?

Open the blade using the Round Hole; the slip-joint detent engages with a positive click and the aluminum back strap stops travel at the fully open position, holding the edge securely without a lock.

What comes in the box and do I need a separate sheath or clip?

The package contains the single Dog Tag folder with its integral carbon-fiber handle, aluminum back strap and steel ball-bearing detent; no sheath or pocket clip is included or required.

Which version should I choose — the C188CFBBKP with carbon-fiber handle or another finish?

Only the C188CFBBKP variant is listed, featuring a black carbon-fiber handle scale, stonewashed CPM S30V sheepfoot blade and black aluminum back strap; no other handle or blade finishes are offered.
