Purpose and fit

The Sta-Kon RB14-38 is a nylon-insulated ring terminal built for 14 AWG copper conductors. It accepts wire from 18 AWG up to 14 AWG and mounts on a 3/8 in stud. The blue colour coding identifies the wire range at a glance. It suits automotive, marine and industrial wiring where a secure crimp connection is required.

Heat, noise and power

The nylon insulation is rated to 221 degrees F, well above typical under-hood or panel temperatures. Tin-plated copper contacts resist corrosion and keep resistance low, so the joint runs cool under its 600 V rating. No moving parts mean silent operation. The serrated barrel grips the conductor firmly once crimped, preventing loosening from vibration.

Upgrade path and limits

This terminal replaces damaged or undersized ring lugs on existing 14 AWG circuits. The jump is worth it when the original lug shows heat damage, corrosion or a loose stud fit. It does not suit wires larger than 14 AWG or smaller than 18 AWG, and it cannot be used with aluminium conductors. Builders needing a different stud size or a fully insulated barrel should select the matching variant.

Questions about this item

How do you crimp the 14 AWG wire into the serrated barrel, and what step is often missed?

Strip the wire to match the 0.52 in barrel length, insert fully so copper reaches the barrel end, then crimp with a calibrated tool sized for 14 AWG; the step often missed is verifying the insulation sits inside the blue nylon sleeve without gaps.

What maintenance or replacement will the nylon-insulated ring terminal need over time?

Inspect the tin-plated copper contact for corrosion or loosening after thermal cycles up to 221 °F; replace the terminal if the serrated barrel shows cracking, the nylon insulation discolours, or the 3/8 in stud hole elongates from vibration.

What is the first limit reached when the terminal runs continuously at its 600 V rating?

The 221 °F maximum operating temperature of the nylon insulation is the first limit; sustained current that raises the terminal above this temperature degrades the partial-coverage sleeve before the copper or tin plating reaches its thermal limit.
