Marine VHF Radio for Hazardous Areas

The Standard Horizon HX400IS is an intrinsically safe handheld VHF two-way radio designed for commercial marine environments where flammable gases or dust may be present. It provides reliable ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication for crews working on tankers, chemical carriers or offshore platforms. The radio meets strict safety standards for use in hazardous locations.

Submersible Build and Extended Battery Life

The housing is submersible to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes, so it survives accidental immersion in rough seas. A 2550 mAh lithium-ion battery powers the unit through long shifts, and both AC and DC quick chargers restore a full charge in three hours. Selectable 5 or 1 watt transmit power lets operators balance range against battery consumption during sustained operations.

40 Programmable Land Mobile Channels

The radio covers 134 MHz to 174 MHz with 40 programmable Land Mobile Radio channels supporting CTCSS and DCS signalling for interference-free group communication. It also includes all USA, International and Canadian marine channels plus NOAA weather channels with alert functionality. Buyers needing wider frequency coverage or trunked radio protocols should consider other equipment.

Questions about this item

How much heat does the 5 W transmit setting generate during a full day of use?

The radio offers selectable 1 or 5 W output; lower power reduces heat during extended operation.

Which antenna connector does the HX400IS require for the 134–174 MHz land-mobile channels?

The handheld uses its fixed antenna; no external connector is needed for the 40 programmable LMR channels.

Will the radio scan marine and 400-series land-mobile channels together in one scan list?

Programmable scan, priority scan and dual watch let you mix marine and LMR channels in a single list.
