5 ft USB 3.0 Desktop Extension

This StarTech.com cable adds 5 feet of reach to a USB 3.0 Type-A port on a desktop or laptop. The male-to-female design relocates the connection point for easier access to flash drives, cameras or external storage. Shielded twisted-pair construction reduces electromagnetic interference. The cable is backward compatible with USB 2.0 hosts and devices.

Suits fixed workstations needing port relocation

Users who want to bring a rear-panel USB port to the front of a desk or mounting bracket will find the length practical. Builders routing cables through tight chassis grommets should verify the connector hood dimensions before purchase. The cable does not add power delivery beyond the host port specification.

Male-to-female Type-A with 5 Gb/s rating

The single specification that decides fit is the USB 3.0 Type-A male-to-female interface operating at 5 Gb/s. Match this to the host port and device plug to ensure the extension works as intended.

Questions about this item

Does the 5 ft STP cable add noticeable heat or power draw when a USB 3.0 device runs all day?

The extension is passive and shielded, so it adds no active heat and negligible resistance; the host port still supplies the standard 5 Gbps bus power.

What port must my computer already have for this male-to-female cable to work?

You need a standard USB-A female port on the host; the cable’s male plug inserts there and presents a female port at the other end.

Will my USB 2.0 flash drives and older peripherals work through this SuperSpeed extension?

Yes, the cable is backward compatible with USB 2.0, so legacy devices operate at their native speed without extra setup.
