Compact USB-C multiport adapter

The StarTech DKT30CHVPD2 adds HDMI 4K 30Hz or VGA 1080p video, three USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports at 5 Gbps, and Gigabit Ethernet through a single USB-C connection. It supports Power Delivery 3.0 pass-through up to 100 W, reserving 15 W for the dock and delivering up to 85 W to the host. The 12 inch attached cable gives extra reach for tight workspaces.

Compatibility checklist

Your host must provide a USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode for video and Power Delivery for charging pass-through. Supported operating systems include Windows 8.1 and 10, macOS 10.10 through 11, Ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04, Chrome OS, Android 9.0, and iPadOS. Thunderbolt 3 ports are also compatible. Verify that your USB-C charger can supply the wattage your laptop requires.

Build integration

The adapter draws up to 15 W for its own operation, so the connected power supply must cover that plus the host's charging need. Two USB-A ports handle peripherals, one supporting BC 1.2 fast charging, while the USB-C downstream port accepts data devices or additional PD input. Gigabit Ethernet provides a wired network link without using a separate dongle. The slim 0.60 by 2.00 by 12.20 inch form factor fits in a laptop bag. Users needing more than one external display or additional legacy ports should consider a larger dock.

Questions about this item

Does the DKT30CHVPD2 include a power adapter or must I supply my own USB-C charger?

The dock draws up to 15 W for itself and passes up to 85 W to the host, so you need to connect your own USB-C laptop power adapter for charging; no power brick is bundled.

Should I use the HDMI or the VGA port to get 4K 30 Hz video from this dock?

Use the HDMI port; it supports 4K at 30 Hz, while the VGA port is limited to 1080p.

What does the 100 W Power Delivery rating mean for my laptop's actual charge speed?

The dock reserves 15 W for its own operation and delivers up to 85 W to the connected laptop when a suitable USB-C power adapter is attached.
