Five-port 2.5G unmanaged switch

The StarTech DS52000 is an unmanaged Ethernet switch with five RJ45 ports that auto-negotiate at 10, 100, 1000 or 2500 Mbps. It suits small offices, home labs or edge deployments that need multi-gigabit uplinks without configuration. The fanless metal enclosure can sit on a desk or be wall-mounted using the included kit. A Kensington lock slot adds physical security for shared spaces.

Cat5e cable limits 2.5GBASE-T distance

The 2.5GBASE-T standard operates over Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6a cabling, but Cat5e links are restricted to shorter runs than higher-grade cables. Auto-MDIX removes the need for crossover cables, and 9KB jumbo frame support reduces overhead for large transfers. The switch draws power from an external 12V DC adapter that accepts 100-240V AC input. Operating temperature range is 0°C to 45°C.

Unmanaged design means no VLAN or QoS

Because the DS52000 is unmanaged, it cannot segment traffic with VLANs, prioritise streams with QoS or be monitored via SNMP. Buyers who need port-level control, link aggregation or remote management must choose a managed switch instead. The front panel provides only power and per-port link/activity LEDs for basic diagnostics.

Questions about this item

Which version of this switch should I choose for a small office needing five 2.5 Gbps ports?

The DS52000 is a single model with five RJ45 ports that each auto-negotiate at 10, 100, 1000 or 2500 Mbps, so there are no alternative capacities to select.

What does the 2.5 Gbps headline speed deliver when the switch is installed in a real network?

Each port runs at up to 2.5 Gbps full duplex, giving 5 Gbps aggregate throughput per link when both endpoints support 2.5GBASE-T over Cat5e or better cabling.

Which Ethernet standard governs the 2.5 Gbps ports and what cable category does it require in practice?

The ports follow IEEE 802.3bz 2.5GBASE-T and operate over Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6a cable up to 100 metres.
