Portable Thunderbolt 3 dock for dual 4K monitors

This StarTech.com TB3DKM2DPL adds two DisplayPort outputs, a 5 Gbps USB-A port and Gigabit Ethernet to Thunderbolt 3 laptops. The 28 cm attached cable reduces strain on ports when the computer sits on a riser stand. Bus power keeps the unit compact for mobile workstations.

Thunderbolt 3 bandwidth caps dual 4K at 60 Hz

The 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 link carries video and data simultaneously, limiting each DisplayPort to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz. Macs with Apple M1 chips support only a single external display through this dock, while Intel-based MacBooks and Windows systems can drive two. USB peripherals share the remaining bandwidth with the Ethernet controller.

28 cm cable length decides fit for raised laptops

The fixed 11 inch tether is the critical dimension; it must reach from the dock position to the host port without pulling. Buyers whose laptops sit farther away or who need a detachable cable for replacement cannot use this model.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the TB3DKM2DPL or the older TB3DKM2DP for my setup?

The TB3DKM2DPL replaces the TB3DKM2DP and adds an 11 inch attached cable for extra reach while keeping the same dual 4K 60Hz DisplayPort, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A and Gigabit Ethernet ports.

What does the 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 throughput deliver when I connect this dock?

The 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 link carries video for two 4096 x 2160 displays at 60 Hz, 5 Gbps USB data and Gigabit Ethernet simultaneously over the single 28 cm cable.

How does the Thunderbolt 3 interface limit what I can plug into the DisplayPort outputs?

Thunderbolt 3 caps the dock at two 4K 60 Hz DisplayPort streams, one 5 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port and one Gigabit Ethernet connection with PXE boot and Wake-on-LAN.
