What this keyboard is

The SteelSeries Apex 9 TKL 64847 is a wired TKL gaming keyboard built on an aluminum alloy frame. It uses OmniPoint 2.0 linear optical switches with per-key actuation adjustment. The compact layout omits the numeric keypad to save desk space for mouse movement. Double-shot PBT keycaps provide a durable, textured surface for extended use.

The specification that decides fit

OmniPoint 2.0 switches let you set each key's actuation point from 0.2 mm to 3.8 mm in 0.1 mm steps, delivering up to 11x faster response and 10x swifter actuation than standard mechanical designs. If you need fixed actuation or prefer tactile or clicky feedback out of the box, this linear optical implementation will not match that requirement.

What the bundled features change

Hot-swap sockets allow switch replacement without soldering, so you can change the feel of individual keys later. 2-in-1 action keys assign two functions to one key at different press depths, such as walk at a light touch and sprint at a deeper press. RGB lighting and all per-key settings are managed through SteelSeries software on Windows; Mac OS X, Xbox and PlayStation receive basic input only.

Questions about this item

How does the 0.2 mm actuation point change typing in actual use?

The OmniPoint 2.0 switches register a keystroke at 0.2 mm, so inputs trigger faster than on standard mechanical keyboards that need more travel.

What does the USB 2.0 interface mean for everyday performance?

USB 2.0 supplies power and data for the keyboard's lighting and switch reporting without needing an extra power adapter or driver installation.

Will the tenkeyless aluminum frame fit a standard keyboard tray?

The TKL layout removes the numpad, making the board narrower than full-size models, and the aluminum frame keeps it rigid on any flat surface.
