Six-pack black ribbon for dot-matrix printers

This SuppliesMax compatible ribbon replaces the IBM InfoPrint 1040440 cartridge in black. The pack contains six individual ribbons ready for installation in supported dot-matrix machines. It is aimed at businesses that run continuous forms, receipts or invoices on legacy impact printers and want a lower-cost supply that still meets OEM specifications.

Replaces OEM ribbon 1040440 and 1040580

The ribbon directly substitutes the original IBM 1040440 and 1040580 parts without modification. Switching is worthwhile when the printer is used daily for multi-part forms or high-volume transaction printing and the cost per page of genuine cartridges becomes a concern. The compatible build is manufactured to the same dimensions and ink formulation so print density and ribbon advance remain unchanged.

Handles multi-part forms and high-volume runs

Each ribbon delivers consistent black output across multi-part carbonless forms, invoices and receipt stacks typical of 4224, 4230 and 4232 series printers. Ink retention is designed to last through extended print sessions without fading or smudging. The ribbon will not support colour printing, graphics-heavy layouts or any non-impact printer technology.

Questions about this item

Does the 1040440 ribbon cartridge fit an IBM 4230 Model 102 without modification?

Yes, the cartridge is listed as compatible with the IBM 4230 Model 102 and all other listed 4224, 4230 and 4232 models, so it drops straight into the printer's ribbon compartment.

When installing the cartridge on a Lexmark 4224 Model 2E3, which step is most often missed?

After seating the cartridge, advance the ribbon manually by turning the take-up knob until fresh black fabric appears; skipping this leaves slack that causes the first pages to print faintly.

How many ribbons from the 6-pack will a high-volume IBM 4232 typically consume in a year?

Each cartridge yields several million characters; heavy invoice printing on a 4232 often uses two to three ribbons per year, so the 6-pack covers roughly two to three years of operation.
