Compact 8-bay rackmount NAS

The Synology RS1221RP+ is a 2U rackmount network-attached storage system built around an AMD Ryzen V1500B quad-core processor running at 2.2 GHz. It ships with 4 GB of DDR4 ECC memory, expandable to 32 GB, and provides eight drive bays for 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA drives. The unit targets small-to-mid-size businesses needing high-throughput file storage, virtualization targets or backup repositories in a short-depth chassis.

Redundant power and expansion slot

This RP model includes dual redundant power supplies to maintain service continuity if one supply or power distribution unit fails. A single PCIe 3.0 x8 slot accepts Synology network interface cards or an M.2 NVMe SSD adapter for read-write caching, letting administrators add 10 GbE connectivity or flash acceleration without occupying drive bays. Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and one eSATA port provide additional attach points for external drives or backup targets.

At 399 mm deep the RS1221RP+ fits standard 2-post racks and shallow 4-post cabinets where full-depth 2U servers cannot go. Front-panel LEDs show power, system status, alert and per-drive health at a glance. Four built-in Gigabit RJ-45 ports support link aggregation and failover for multi-user SMB, NFS, iSCSI and VPN workloads. The operating range spans 0 °C to 35 °C. Buyers needing more than eight internal drives must add an RX418 expansion unit; the chassis itself cannot accommodate additional bays.
