Four-Bay NVMe Enclosure

The TerraMaster D4 holds four M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs in a compact, diskless chassis measuring 138 x 60 x 140 mm. It connects via USB4 at 40Gbps and is compatible with Thunderbolt 5, 4 and 3. The unit ships with a 12V/2A power adapter supporting 12V-20V input and includes active, temperature-controlled cooling.

Media Creators and Mac Mini Owners

This enclosure suits video editors, photographers and Mac mini users who need fast, portable external storage or a bootable macOS drive. It is not for builders who require hardware RAID, users who need 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drive support, or anyone wanting a NAS with built-in network ports.

40Gbps USB4 Interface

The single specification that decides fit is the 40Gbps USB4 connection, which delivers up to 3,224MB/s with four SSDs or 1,608MB/s with a single drive. Your host must provide a USB4 or Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5 port to reach these speeds; lesser ports will limit throughput.

Questions about this item

Which capacity should I pick for the four M.2 slots?

Each slot accepts an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD up to 8 TB, so the enclosure can hold 32 TB total when all four bays are populated.

What does the 3224 MB/s figure mean once the unit is in my Mac or PC?

That is the measured sequential throughput with four Samsung 990 PRO 4 TB drives connected via USB4 40 Gbps to an Apple M4 Mac mini; a single drive in the same enclosure reaches 1608 MB/s.

What interface standard caps the real-world speed of this enclosure?

The USB4 40 Gbps link is the bottleneck; the enclosure also negotiates Thunderbolt 5/4/3 and USB 3.2/3.1, but the 40 Gbps ceiling limits combined SSD throughput to the quoted 3224 MB/s.
