This Tiffen glass filter creates an eight-point starburst pattern around bright highlights such as candles or streetlights. It is designed for photographers and videographers who want to add a romantic mood to weddings, engagements or similar events. The rectangular 6.6x6.6" format fits professional matte boxes used on cinema-style camera rigs. It is not intended for shooters who need a circular screw-in filter for standard lens threads.

Installation and typical issues

The filter slides into a compatible 6.6x6.6" matte box tray or holder, requiring no tools or adapters for that system. Users must ensure the matte box is correctly flagged to prevent unwanted flare from strong light sources just outside the frame. Dust or fingerprints on the optical glass will appear as artefacts in the starburst rays, so clean handling and a microfibre cloth are essential. It will not work with filter holders built for smaller rectangular sizes or circular diameters.

Practical limits of the 6.6x6.6" format

The large rectangular dimensions suit wide-angle cinema lenses and heavy matte boxes, but add bulk compared to smaller filter systems. The fixed eight-point star pattern cannot be rotated or adjusted independently of the camera orientation. Strong point sources produce the most pronounced effect, while diffuse lighting yields little visible change. The effect is baked into the footage at capture and cannot be removed or altered in post-production.
