Compact 400mm f/8 mirror lens

The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF is a super-telephoto mirror lens built for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras. Its catadioptric design keeps the barrel extremely compact and lightweight compared with conventional telephoto optics. The fixed f/8 aperture suits outdoor photographers who want long reach without the bulk of a large zoom. Manual focus operation appeals to shooters who prefer tactile control over autofocus speed.

Verify Z-mount compatibility

Confirm your camera uses the Nikon Z mount with the 42 mm thread and 0.75 mm pitch described in the specifications. The lens has no electronic contacts, so aperture stays fixed at f/8 and the body will not record EXIF data for focal length or aperture. You must be comfortable focusing manually, ideally using focus peaking or magnification aids on the camera. Buyers who need autofocus, variable aperture or electronic metadata should consider alternative optics.

Mirror construction and fixed aperture implications

The reflex optical path produces the characteristic doughnut-shaped bokeh and a strong compression effect that flattens perspective at long distance. Macro magnification reaches 1:2.5 for close-up detail on small subjects. Because the aperture cannot be stopped down, exposure is controlled solely by shutter speed and ISO, which may require higher sensitivities in lower light. The lightweight barrel balances well on Z-series bodies, making handheld sessions practical for travel and wildlife observation.

Questions about this item

Does the box include a tripod foot or must I buy one separately?

The lens is supplied as a compact mirror unit with front and rear caps; a tripod collar is not included and must be purchased separately if required.

Should I choose the 400 mm or 500 mm version for a Nikon Z body?

The product name specifies 400 mm f/8, while the description text mentions 500 mm; verify the exact focal length on the box label before ordering.

What does the fixed f/8 aperture mean when shooting on a Z-series camera?

The aperture stays at f/8 regardless of focus distance, so exposure is controlled only by ISO and shutter speed, and the viewfinder darkens in low light.
