Bluetooth 5.0 USB adapter for PC

The TP-Link UB500 adds Bluetooth 5.0 to desktops and laptops running Windows 10, 8.1 or 7. It enables wireless connections with mice, keyboards, printers, headsets, speakers and PS4 or Xbox controllers. The nano-sized dongle stays almost flush with the USB port for portable use.

Low-energy operation and range

Bluetooth low energy and enhanced data rate technology reduce power draw while maintaining a stable link. The adapter delivers up to twice the speed and four times the coverage of Bluetooth 4.0. Backward compatibility extends to versions 4.2, 4.0, 3.0, 2.1, 2.0 and 1.1.

Windows 7 requires a separate driver

Windows 10 and 8.1 work without extra software. Windows 7 users must download the driver from the manufacturer website before the adapter will function. Buyers who need native plug-and-play on Windows 7 should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

How do I install the UB500 on Windows 7?

Plug the nano adapter into a USB port, then download the Windows 7 driver from the TP-Link website and run the installer before pairing devices. Windows 10 and 8.1 install the driver automatically.

Will the UB500 need a firmware update or hardware replacement later?

The adapter has no user-serviceable parts and no firmware-update utility is provided; if the USB port or radio fails, the whole unit is replaced.

What range limit appears first when streaming audio continuously?

Bluetooth 5.0 gives up to four times the coverage of Bluetooth 4.0, but walls and interference will reduce the practical distance well below the theoretical maximum.
